This oyster shell, one of several embedded in the mosaics around the apsewas initially measured using the CART system laser from the top of thechiborium at a distance of about 5 meters and later from scafolding closeto the wall.
The two sets of measurements were in agrement to within 1-2 millimetersthough hand measurements of the sectional information were difficult toobtain and many less were taken.
This exercise was undertaken largely to see what kind of results could beobtained but the question of the origin of these shells (clearly not local)was also of interest and, based on the CAD drawing you see below, the speciescould be determined.
