Preparing your directory listings

• My Computer -> View

Change to List or Details
• My Computer -> View -> Folder Options (win'98)

My Computer -> Tools -> Folder Options (win'XP)

Create a Catalogue

• ASCix
Opens the cataloguer
User: Create an entry for yourself with a 3 digit code
• New:
Create a new cataloguer
• Name:
Enter your 3 digit user code as the catalogue name
• Directory:
Put it in directory C:\ARIS05
You should also create a catalogue for your group

Put it in directory C:\ARIS05 as well

The "Title" is the text description that will appear in the index to the web pages so it should be descriptive but not too long.

Here you describe the files you will be cataloguing and the software you want to use to process it.
• Extension:
the 3 character file extension that defines the file type

The full path to the program you wish to use to edit this type of file.

• Comments:

A description of the program intended to help a future researcher determine what they should do to access files of this type.
• CartHTML

This is the configuration utility for the HTML publishing utility. Select the CHCONFIG button and enter the title you desire for the web pages of this data set.
Then Apply and close
Copy your documents and photos to the SOURCE directory you just created and you are ready to start cataloguing. More detailed instructions are available by clicking the Help buttons in ASCix

The HTML Pages

• Text
• Converted to HTML

• Creates thumbnails (180 pixels wide)

• Should be saved as .JPG at a resolution suitable for distribution over the internet

• More Complex files
• Creates hyperlinks to either the right frame or to a new window
• Captions are taken from the shadow files
• Such files should be saved in formats available to web browsers either directly or
through the intermediary of freely available plugins
• AutoCAD .DWG save as .DWF (requires DWF viewer plugin)
• Formated documents such as .DOC save as .PDF
• Movies can be saved as .MPG or .WMV which are native to Windows or, if necessary,
to .MOV which requires the QuickTime plugin.
• Spreadsheets and Database tables should be saved in comma separated format.
• Files requiring conversion for internet compatibility can be saved in both formats if it is
felt that the original may be useful in the future.
• Both files should be catalogued with exactly the same name with only the file
extension to separate them.
• This can be done by overwriting the number of the second file catalogued.
